Aim

To give a general survey of sustainable development and to broadening and deepening the knowledge and ability to model complex phenomena primarily with relation to environmental applications.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After the course the student should have acquired the ability to:
· explain the importance of sustainable development in its three dimensions: ecological, economic and social
· give an overview of human impact and effects on Earth's climate and the anthropogenic use of energy
· describe the challenges and strategies to reduce human impact on climate
· set up mathematical models of selected environmental problems, solving or simulating these models, and reflect on the modelling process
· analyze results of solutions or simulations of models, evaluate qualities of the models and their limitations for a given purpose, and present this for a given target group.

Content

The course contains three parts:
 A. Ethics, sustainable development and an overview of some key environmental and resource problems
 B. Global climate change
 · Basics on science behind global climate change
 · Simple climate models
 · Possible solutions to the global problem of climate change
 C. The transition of the energy system 
 · The global energy system
 · Integration of renewable technologies in the electricity system, theory and modeling


Organisation

The course includes materials for self studies, seminars, lectures, hand-ins, and computer labs.

Texts made available through the course webpage. Any additional reading material will be announced later.

Examination including compulsory elements

Passed result of the project includes: presentation of lab projects, written hand-in. The written exam is performed as a computer exam.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
