Course specific prerequisites

Basic courses in materials science and manufacturing technology including metal cutting.

Aim

The course aims at facilitating manufacturing engineering knowledge at advanced level regarding metal cutting, which is one of the most value-adding operations in modern manufacturing industry.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Understand the basics of applied metrology, workpiece quality and functional surfaces.
  • Recognize diverse machining operations and gain insight into their industrial applications.
  • Learn the basic concepts of machine tools and process-machine interactions.
  • Obtain knowledge of cutting tools and cutting-tool materials.
  • Gain an understanding of machining with abrasives - including grinding and fine-finishing technology.
  • Apply modelling of machining operations using numerical and empirical methods.
  • Use laboratory equipment to assess machining quality.
  • Apply sustainability aspects to manufacturing technology.
  • Learn about production engineering management and investments projects.
  • Develop teamwork skills in an engineering context to solve real-life industrial manufacturing problems.

Content

Metal cutting is a crucial value-adding process at the end of the manufacturing chain. The advancement of metal cutting has therefore unmatched capabilities of increasing production efficiency and improving component performance in a variety of industrial sectors: automotive, aerospace, energy, bearing, tooling, etc.

In this course, the fundamentals of processes and the machines used in the manufacture of components will be addressed. Specific focus will be placed on machining operations, engineering aspects of cutting tools and cutting-tool materials, performance characteristics of machines, cutting fluids, surface functionalization, etc. The course will also develop the competencies in management and sustainability required when advancing manufacturing processes.

Organisation

The course includes lectures, case studies, tutorials (lab exercises), group assignments and presentations. A typical case-study will examine scientific development and industrial end-use of manufacturing processes and machines. The group assignments will form the basis for developing team-based engineering skills needed to solve real manufacturing problems in the industry. For this, a study-visit to a manufacturing plant will be organized to experience machining and production on a large scale.

The course has strong links with the Chalmers Centre for Metal Cutting Research (MCR) and is designed to usefully propagate the current state-of-the-art in manufacturing. Therefore, guest lectures from experts in the industry (e.g. Volvo Car Corporation, Sandvik Coromant) will provide students a unique opportunity to learn key competencies required in production.

The lectures will be given in English.

Examination including compulsory elements

3 group assignments, 2 individual quizzes, an oral presentation and a written final report. 

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
