Eligibility
General entry requirements for Master's level (second cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Specific entry requirements
English 6 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Course specific prerequisites
Required is a basic knowledge in materials science and engineeringAim
Increasing demands on properties like light weight, high-temperature stability, high load, wear resistance, bio-compatibility, etc. resulted in the development of a wide range of advanced engineering materials. In the course several of these modern types of materials (nanostructured materials including catalysts, composites, Titanium as bio-compatible and lightweight structural material, etc.) will be discussed. Aim is to introduce topics from the research front in the area of Materials Science and Engineering, and to demonstrate how different materials concepts can be used to achieve novel and/or improved materials properties in order to realize new products. In parallel to the different materials concepts, commercialization aspects will be covered for providing knowledge on intellectual property and innovation strategies (When do I know I have a business idea? Should I publish my results or apply for a patent? What is asked from me if I decide to start a business?)Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- describe the different material concepts and their critical parts
- describe the design strategy
- relate the improvement in properties to the materials microstructure
- comment on application limits and exemplify some of the trade-offs involved
- describe different protection strategies
- analyse technological innovations and markets and understand how customer value can be created
Content
In the course, advanced engineering materials like nanostructured materials, metal foams, magnets, etc. will be discussed using examples from recent developments and ongoing research. In parallel to the different materials concepts, commercialization aspects will be covered for providing knowledge on intellectual property and innovation strategies.Organisation
The course will be divided into lectures, home assignment/exercises, and a project work combining materials aspects and commercialization. Moreover, a series of presentations will be given by company representatives and entrepreneurs.Literature
Specific literature will be mentioned/handed out during the course.Examination including compulsory elements
A written exam and an approved project work (graded) is required for passing the course. The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
