Eligibility

General entry requirements for Master's level (second cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

English 6 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

MPP067 Computer aided modeling or PPU010 Computer aided industrial design (CAID) or LMU602 Computer aided design, solid and surface modeling or equal course in Alias.

Aim

This course aims at giving the students deepened knowledge of and competence in modelling and visualization in 3D CAD systems.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Describe and exemplify the digital product developmental process, from early conceptual models to final high-grade geometry.
  • Describe, analyse and execute advanced NURBS Modelling (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines, a mathematical method to describe geometries)
  • Describe and execute virtual analyses to achieve continuity between surfaces.
  • Show an in-depth understanding of and be able to generate digital materials (shaders) to support photorealistic image production.
  • Understand the possibility of using Generative Design

Content

The course is divided into three different sections:

1. Concept modeling - 3 workshops in which various programs are used to work with the concept geometries.

2. Advanced surface modeling and visualization - lecture / exercise methods of how to work with advanced surface modeling, preparation for export to other CAD - system. Lecture / exercise on how to create photo-realistic images from digital surface

3. Presentation of Design - lecture / exercise on real-time presentation and animation.

Organisation

This course will be based on partly scheduled, supervised tutoring and practical exercises. Theory and practical exercises will be mixed.

Literature

Will be selected at start of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

An active participation in class in addition to concluded and reported projects, specified in the course and a small exam.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
