Eligibility
General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Specific entry requirements
The same as for the programme that owns the course.Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Course specific prerequisites
The courses LMA401/MVE575 Calculus and MVE580/MVE570 Linear algebra and differential equations, or corresponding knowledge.Aim
The course will provide the students with knowledge and tools to describe and handle energy supply, energy storage and energy conversion in technical systems and engineering applications with a sustainability perspective. This includes basic knowledge in thermodynamics, energy technology and fluid mechanics. Furthermore, general knowledge about the energy supply and energy use in society will be given.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
Knowledge and understanding- Describe the energy system with the most important primary energy sources and energy carriers globally and in Sweden.
- Describe various forms of energy and technologies for conversion between them as well as for storage of energy.
- Describe fundamental thermodynamic terminology and the first and second law of thermodynamics.
- Describe properties of fluids and fundamental fluid mechanic equations.
- Describe fundamental concepts and mechanisms for heat transfer.
- Analyze and perform calculations for common types of energy conversions and thermodynamic processes including their efficiency.
- Determine energy use for various activities and processes.
- Perform calculations for fluid mechanics based on Bernoulli equations.
- Plan, perform and report applied measurements for fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
- Evaluate sustainability for various types of energy and materials use and apply economical use and circularity.
Content
The course covers the following topics:- Energy forms and energy quality.
- Approaches for energy analysis including basic thermodynamics, such as system definitions, energy conversion, efficiency, reversible and irreversible processes.
- Technical equipment for energy conversion and energy storage.
- Basic fluid dynamics, concepts and calculations based on Bernoulli equations.
- Properties of substances and fluids relevant for energy and flow applications.
- Primary and secondary energy resources in society.
- Environmental impact and sustainability of energy use, electricity production and energy storage.
Organisation
The teaching is organized with lectures, tutorials and laboratory lessons.Literature
Thermal-Fluid Sciences by Cengel, Cimbala och Ghajar, McGrawHill.Examination including compulsory elements
Exam (6.0 hp) and Laboratory (1,5 hp). The Laboratory is examined by active participation and a report. A non-compulsory quiz with bonus points may be given. The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
