The course gives knowledge and skills in law and compliance with focus on the areas that are relevant for the role as mariner within Swedish law and international conventions. The economy part gives basic knowledge in chartering of ships.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
Juridical learning outcomes:1. Identify and civil law from administrative and criminal law
2. Explain the relation between international conventions and national law
3. Explain and evaluate forms of associations within the shipping industry
4. Apply basic principles in contract and sale of goods law and to understand delivery clauses
5. Differentiate type of vessels and apply rules on ships nationality and register
6. Account for and apply rules on shipowners liability and workers liability
7. Account for function and liability in ship management
8. Apply basic regulations in Swedish and international employment laws
9. Monitor and control compliance in accordance with maritime security regulations
10. Account for the main features of salvage, lifesaving at sea and marine insurances
11. Apply relevant regulations regarding environment and work environment.
12. Relate to business ethics issues.
13. Relate to ethical issues in relation to employment law.
Economic learning objectives:
1. Explain the concept of "Ship Management and Commercial Management" and know how to explain what both concepts mean
2. To know which four different shipping markets exist and the meaning of each of them
3. Explain the meaning of the basic charter forms Bareboat (BB), Time Charter (TC), Contract of Affreightment (COA), Voyage Charter (VC) and as well clarify the cost distribution for each different charter form
4. To calculate a simple voyage calculation (with given values) and be able to explain what TCE (Time Charter Earnings) is and what its function is in ship chartering?
5. What are "Charter Parties and Voyage orders" and why do these exist in shipping?
6. Laytime - what is it? How does it work? How do you calculate an easy laytime calculation?
7. Demurrage - what is it? How does it work? How do you calculate an easy demurrage calculation?
8. Speed and bunker consumption - what is that? How does it work and how can the machinery department contribute positively to this and what does the FIFO method imply?
