Eligibility

General entry requirements for Master's level (second cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

English 6 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Mathematics (including mathematical statistics, numerical analysis, linear algebra and multi-variable calculus), mechanics and strength of materials, fluid mechanics.

Aim

The course comprises of two parts; Design Basis and Stability, with the intention of giving the students specific knowledge about the design of marine structures.
The Design Basis module gives the students an understanding about the markets and logistics of maritime transport as well as the organizations and regulatory framework governing global shipping.
The Stability module includes the geometry of a hull as well as the stability of a ship, how to calculate transverse and longitudinal stability in intact and damaged condition.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Design Basis:
  • Be familiar with ship types and their respective missions in global markets
  • Have knowledge about the hierarchy of organizations governing the rules and regulations of design and operations of ships and having knowledge of the impact of the rules on the design of a ship
  • Have knowledge about market drivers in maritime logistics and the need for innovation of ships
  • Have knowledge about rules and regulations concerning safety of marine transport and the design of ships
  • Being able to define functional requirements based on a ship’s mission
Stability:
  • Be familiar with the shape of a hull based on the functional requirements of the ship.
  • Identify factors influencing the stability of a ship
  • Understand a lines drawing
  • Describe the hull main particulars using the right terminology
  • Use CAD software to generate a ship hull
  • Apply safety requirement in the design of a hull
  • Carry out analyses of transverse and longitudinal stability in intact and damaged condition
  • Be familiar with rules and methods for probabilistic damage stability analyses.

Content

Design Basis:
  • Ship types and shipping markets
  • Stake holders in the commercial side of shipping
  • Maritime logistics and market development.
  • Legal framework related to commercial shipping contracts
  • Ships scope of use related to their construction
Stability:
  • Parametric description of the hull: main dimensions and shape coefficients.
  • The lines drawing.
  • Computer Aided Design of ships.
  • Hydrostatics.
  • Stability at small and large heel angles.
  • Righting moment curve.
  • Longitudinal stability and trim.
  • Effects of free surfaces.
  • Lost buoyancy / added weight of barges.
  • Symmetric and asymmetric flooding.
  • Stability during flooding.
  • Rules and regulations.
  • Probabilistic method for damaged stability.

Organisation

Teaching is in the form of lectures, tutorials and mandatory reports, computer assignments and group simulation

Examination including compulsory elements

Design Basis (report)
Quizz (pass/fail)
Liner Shipping Game(attendance)

Stability:
Written exam (determine course grade)
Design class (reports)
COS exercise (attendance)

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
