Has a valid certificate for Basic Safety Training.

Has a valid medical certificate for seafarers.

Aim

The on board training aims to educate / train students in the practical skills of previously obtained theoretical knowledge in operating conditions aboard merchant vessels in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention and to obtain the time at sea required by Swedish Transport Agency (TSFS 2011:116) to obtain certificate as deck officer.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

General learning outcome for all on board training
- Mastering such practical knowledge, experience and skills necessary to serve as an officer on a smaller merchant vessel in domestic trade

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Steer the ship by given orders
- Fulfil duties as look-out
- Use life saving and fire fighting equipment
- Describe shipping impacts on the marine environment and to apply measures to protect the marine environment
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of deck maintenance and apply safe working practices including the use of personal protective devices
- Perform tasks related to mooring, unmooring and anchoring
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to determine the ship's position by terrestrial observations
- Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to determine the ship's position by use of electronic navigational aids
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to use navigational charts (including ECDIS) and other nautical publications
- Demonstrate knowledge and correctly use information from radar (including ARPA)
- Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to operate echo sounding devices and to apply information correctly
- Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to use both magnetic and gyro compass and to determine their error by terrestrial means
- Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to use the vessel's steering equipment
- Obtain and interpret weather reports from various sources
- Demonstrate an understanding of and apply COLREG
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of emergency procedures on board
- Demonstrate knowledge of ship handling and understanding how the ship can be affected by wind and currents
- Demonstrate knowledge of maintenance systems and demonstrate the ability to perform relevant maintenance work on board
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of the vessel's main and auxiliary engine
