Aim

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge about the rules that governs ship and ship owning companies and also to provide knowledge about some of the most frequently used standard contracts used in ship management and chartering. The aim of the course is also to practice report writing and to apply legal method.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After completion of this course, the student should be able to interpret and apply law, rules and legal principles that is covered by the course content, and to draft, interpret and analyse, in particular with regards to performance, cost and risk, the standard agreements that are part of the content of the course. The aim is also that the student should be able to solve legal problems through the use of legal method.

Content

Ship, nationality, registration. Waters and zones. Maritime safety and security. Compliance. Shipowners liability (including pollution) and right to limit. Ship Management. Maritime labor law. Salvage, General Average and towage. Charterparties. (Sustainable shipping)

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, literature studies, assignments, tutorials and review questions.

The course is examined through the assignments and a concluding digital exam.
