Aim

The aim of the course is to give the participant an introduction and understanding of the emerging of the Swedish state, how the current government and its institutions are construed and how the state's power is distributed between the parliament, the government, the courts and other authorities. The second part of the course aims to introduce and explain basic legal concepts and principals, to differentiate between different types of property, legal entities, contracts etc. The aim of the third part of the course is to introduce and explain industry agreed documents; how they are construed and dealt with in practice. It also deals with negotiation and concluding of contracts.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Describe the development of the Swedish sate and its government.
  • Explain the basics of the constitutions and the principle of public access to official records.
  • Describe the Swedish legislation process.
  • Briefly explain Sweden's role in EU and how EU-law affects Sweden.
  • Explain basic legal terms and principles in cilil law such as
      o Physical and legal person, legal subject and legal capacity,
      o The types of property,
      o The Sale of gods Act and agreed sales contracts,
      o Copyright and patent,
      o Legal entities, sole proprietorship, Limited companies etc.,
  • Present and have more detailed knowledge in one of the agreed documents commonly used in the engineer or architectural branch.

Part 1 Basic institutional law, legislation in Sweden and EU
  • The Swedish Constitution and laws
  • Separation of powers, the Swedish System
  • The court system
  • The legislation process
Part 2 Introduction to law and civil law.
  • Property law
  • General contract law
  • Special contract law
Part 3
  • Standard agreements in engineering and architecture, project assignment.

Organisation

Part 1: 2 credits, approx. 50h consisting of lectures, literature studies, group assignments and in class. discussions.
Part 2: 4 credits, approx. 100h consisting of lectures, literature studies, review questions, assignments.
Part 3: 1,5 credits, approx. 40h consisting of introduction lecture to and project work and presentation of  one of the industry standard agreements.

Examination including compulsory elements

Examination on written assignments and written exam with multiple choice questions.
