Course specific prerequisites

Knowledge of basic methods for generating ideas and concept evaluation within product development.

Aim

The aim of the course is to teach and train in project form systematic methods and tools for re-design and analysis of product concepts pertaining to different central aspects.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Apply scenario techniques to describe the use situation/environment intended for the product. - Apply function structures to describe and analyse the functional structure of a product. - Apply Ischikawa-diagram to categorize and analyse parameters and related aspects. - Apply requirement and features profile in order to identify and specify critical material features. - Use software for robust design and tolerance analysis on a simple assembled product. - Use software for DFA-analyse to evaluate the assembly friendliness of an assembled product. - Use software for systematic materials selection in order to identify suitable design materials based on a requirement profile. - Apply FMEA to identify and envisage the effect of different error sources. - Apply LCA-analysis in order to analyse a product s negative effect on the environment. - Critically evaluate both results and usefulness of the respective methods. - Run a group development project. - Present results in writing and orally, also of work carried out.

Content

Course coverage with selections from design methods (how things are done). Presumed is a foreknowledge of design process basics (what is to be done) acquired from M1 and M2. Application of the methods in a project for re-design of an engineering product. Course lectures consisting of four main parts: design methods, product and materials analysis and design. Various sub-stages (methods): methods in connection with re-design, function structures, design for assembly (DFA), layout (design rules), features profiles for materials, merit values, selection of materials, module design, robust design, quality methods and environmental analysis. A large design task shall be carried out involving parts of the course content. Its aim is re-design of an existing product and, if possible, should be done in collaboration with the industry. It concludes with documentation and presentation of the entire project in the presence of the other course students. Also involved are two lab tests (computer program for DFA and selection of materials) and lab exercises involving selected parts of the course content.

Organisation

The course consists of lectures and exercises at various stages. Also project work on re-design is carried out in groups. Applied here are what has been learnt from the lectures and exercises in the other stages.

Examination including compulsory elements

Two short written exams and graded project task. Final Certificate appraisal is made up of written exams and project tasks. Both must be approved. Grade scale: TH.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
