The aim is to give the student basic knowledge of the shipping industry with technical and economic aspects. This aim includes the understanding of the influence from an international market on the development of new transport solutions involving ships and ships equipment.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Explain commercial shipping in its context; historically, present.
- Identify and explain technical features such as basic design of different ship types, typical cargo and cargo handling gear from a operational/commercial perspective.
- Explain shipping competition for cargo and 'product differentiation' in shipping services.
- Identify and describe different stakeholders in commercial shipping.
- Explain how price and value of ships fluctuates with freight markets.
- Explain the functions and costs associated with chartering forms: bareboat, timecharter and voyage charter.
- Calculate the economic result of a specific voyage based on voyage charter or time charter, including slow steaming.
- Explain the regulating system of shipping, the role of International Maritime Organization (IMO), national maritime administrations, Port State Control, classification societies and identify the four main shipping conventions and describe its context.
- Thoroughly explain the four shipping markets and the market forces that creates market cycles.
- Thoroughly explain the shipping market fluctuations using the shipping supply and demand model.
- Be able to apply the commercial perspective in design of new ships or equipment.

The course is examined through a written hand-in assignment and a written final exam.
