The course aims to provide students with skills to visualize, concrete and present ideas, and knowledge of basic volumes, perspective and shading.Further, the course aims to deepen and develop the students' skills in written and oral communication.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- acquire skills in basic drawing techniques.
apply sketching techniques for volume and proportion.- develop basic skills in design, sketch and layout with digital tools.
- understand and use vector- and pixel based image formats.
- understand, describe and practically apply basic color theory.
- plan and structure text based on current criteria for academic text with technical content and effectively search, evaluate and reference relevant sources.
- acquire knowledge and apply skills in oral, written and visual presentation.
Content
The course is divided into parts A and B.
Part A includes sketching techniques, colour theory, digital tools and croquis, with depictions of the human body and objects for the purpose of studying form. The students practice seeing and describing shapes, volumes, proportions and colour and colour schemes. The teaching is mainly conducted as teacher-led exercises. The course includes basic shapes, basic perspective theory and shading techniques, as well as basic color theory. It also includes digital tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator or equivalent software, and storage of images.
Part B focuses on writing and communication. The students work on a comprehensive writing assignment. The work is also presented orally and with a summary poster in front of the class. Elements related to writing in the course for example text disposition, style, structure, genres and rules for the management of references.
Organisation
The course is given as lectures and exercises. The teaching consists of lectures (about 30 hours), exercises (about 70 hours), and own work (about 100 hours).Literature

To pass the course, active participation in exercises, seminars and lectures is required, as well as passing the assignments and presentations. Grades are given as U, G.The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers about disability study support.
