Course specific prerequisites

The courses LMU631 Designintroduction and LMU602 Computer aided design, solid- and surface modelling, or equivalent knowledge.

Aim

The course aims to provide deeper knowledge in surface modeling. The course also aims to create an understanding of the concept of surface quality. It also aims to develop the knowledge of digitally produced images.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • understand the basics of curves and surfaces built with NURBS theory.
  • practice in-depth skills in handling NURBS modeling.
  • assimilate an understanding of the concepts of continuity.
  • practice skills in modeling with G0-, G1-, G2 continuity and understanding of G3 and G4 continuity.
  • make use of increased skills (from the basic course LMU602 or similar) in modeling curves and surfaces. This refers both to modeling freely in the digital environment, as well as to existing curves and or surfaces with varying continuity requirements.
  • further develop the understanding of the methodology of surface modeling. Important is the understanding of abstracting products to primary surfaces as a tool for the basis of the design work.
  • can create models with good surface quality. This refers to the importance of the placement of the CV points in a "hull" and how this affects the quality of the surface.
  • basic understanding of polygon modeling.

Content

The course is given as a number of specific exercises to be submitted and judged. The course includes exercises in which students create their own products based on a given framework. Great part of the course focus on their own work in order to acquire skills in surface modeling.

The course integrates lectures and exercises. The course is conducted by individual projects.

Finalized projects. Grades U, 3, 4, 5.
