Aim

The course aims to provide knowledge of modern computer-based construction methods, and tools for geometric description (modeling) of industrial products. The course further aims to introduce and provide basic skills in surface modeling and solid modeling. The course also aims to provide insight into and understanding of the basics of technical drawing.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • acquired knowledge of and skills in modeling and visualization in CAID systems.
  • acquire skills in planning and building a digital surface model of a given product.
  • acquire skills in building solid models using modern CAD software.
  • acquire knowledge of basic technical drawing including views and sections.
  • acquire skills in the knowledge of reading technical drawings.
  • acquire skills in understanding and basic knowledge of digital ergonomics software.

Content

The course is divided into exercises and lectures. The course consists of two parts:
  • Part A: Surface modeling (CAID) (3.7 credits)
  • Part B: Solid modeling and drawing techniques (CAD) (3, 8 credits)
In the part surface modeling the software Autodesk Alias Automotive is used to model and visualize surfaces. The ergonomics Program "Jack" is introduced in a part of the course. Basics for creating presentation materials and preparation of still image rendering are introduced.
In solid modeling the soft ware Catia V5 is used. Creation of detailed drawings, parameterization and assembly of several components, some of the included parts. Technical drawing includes a variety of views, dimensions, dimensional tolerances, and reading drawings.

Organisation

Lectures (14 h), CAID exercises (40 h) and CAD exercises (40 h) and individual work (100 hours).

Literature

Literature will be announced at course start.

Examination including compulsory elements

Participation in exercises and projects. Passed tests. Graded as U, G.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
