Eligibility
General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Specific entry requirements
The same as for the programme that owns the course.Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Course specific prerequisites
The courses TME221 Mechanics, Mechanics advanced course and LMU113 Strength of materials, or equivalent knowledge.Aim
The aim of the course is that students are to attain deep, basic understanding about a selection of machine elements of central importance in mechanical engineering. Special attention is drawn to mechanical transmissions. The subject has a central role for a mechatronic engineer because of the wide multitude of machine elements in a lot of different areas (from kitchen devices to vehicles).Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
to describe the fundamental way of operation and the characteristic performance of some machine elements as:
- belt transmissions.
- planetary gear trains.
- different types of gear boxes.
- power screws.
- bolted joints.
- press and shrink interference joints.
- brakes
The student will also receive skills in dimensioning the machine elements above. Furthermore, the student will have knowledge and be able to make easier analysis of:
- clutches and couplings.
- springs.
- bearings.
- gear transmissions.
Content
For the analyses of machine elements knowledge in mechanics, strength of materials and mathematics are used as "tools". In addition, engineering skills are trained such as assumptions and approximations and handling of complex problems with a wide solutions space. The treated machine elements in the course are listed above.Organisation
The course is divided into integrated lectures and problem solving sessions (50 h), major assignments (10 h) and labs (4 h).Literature
Mägi, Melkersson och Evertsson, Lärobok i Maskinelement, Studentlitteratur, 2017Examination including compulsory elements
The examination is based on a written exam, grades TH, and also approved assignments and labs. The course syllabus contains changes
