Aim

The aim of the course is to give a fundamental understanding of manufacturing planning and control, be familiar with manufacturing planning and control terminology and concepts, and be able to apply some basic models and methods for planning and controlling material flows. Further the course aims to introduce the fundamental principals for Lean production.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • descibe the production task and the task and goal for production logistics.
  • describe the efficiency variables delivery service, capital tied up and capacity.
  • describe and analyse different types of production systems.
  • apply simpel methods for line balancing.
  • apply ABC-classification.
  • describe the function of inventory and different ways to classify inventory.
  • describe and apply calculation of safety stock.
  • describe sales and operation planning, master planning, materials planning and shop floor scheduling.
  • describe and apply material- and capacity planning methods.
  • describe and apply methods for lot sizing.
  • describe and apply quantitative forecast methods and methods for calculating forecast errors.
  • describe various aspects of material supply.
  • describe the principles for Lean production.
  • describe the Lean tools 5S, visual management, standardised work, value stream mapping, kanban, SMED, Kaizen and PDCA.

The course is based on a combination of lectures, exercises, literature seminars (compulsory) and games (compulsary).

Examination including compulsory elements

Two minor test (for grade 3) and/or a written exam (for grade 3, 4 or 5). Compulsory elements: Attendance at compulsory elements, approved assigments and literature seminars.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
