Aim

The course aims to provide insight into a modern machine engineering role in a manufacturing company and provide basic knowledge of engineering technology manufacturing, machinery, tools, measurements and tolerances, as well as providing insight into the intermediate production.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

This course provides a detailed overview of the most common processes used in manufacturing companies. After completing the course the students should have a basic knowledge of the conventional processing methods of metals, plastic injection molding parts and processing of modern materials such as carbon fiber and fiberglass. In addition, knowledge of advanced manufacturing, e.g. use of additive manufacturing processes (3D printing), is obtained. Furthermore, the students should acquire basic knowledge of numerically controlled machine tools and their programming specifically with computer (CAM).

Content

  • The course responsible for the manufacturing methods of semi-finished and finished product. Intermediate production is treated as an overview. Metallic material behavior during processing are treated briefly.
  • The greatest emphasis is placed on the workshop technical methods for processing methodology, machinery, tools and equipment. The course includes an understanding of the form elements and methodology for processing.
  • Polymeric Materials: The course covers the injection molding of plastic parts. This part consists of lectures and exercises.
  • Composites: The course covers composite materials such as carbon-fiber - Kevlar / epoxy. Part contains lectures.
  • Manufacturing Economy: Conventional and plastic fabrication. Emphasis is placed on basic superintend consent of the machining process and production methods turning, milling and drilling.
  • Numerically controlled machine tools and its programming are briefly while greater emphasis on computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM) specifically for the manufacturing of complex surfaces.

Organisation

The course is conducted as lectures, tutorials and practicals. The laboratory work is carried out to practically illustrate the leading manufacturing methods and create awareness of the engineering equipment and machinery.

Examination including compulsory elements

Written exam, grading 3, 4, 5. Laboratory work and related assignments, grading: pass.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
