Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

The courses LMA401/MVE575 Calculus and MVE580/MVE570 Linear algebra and differential equations, or corresponding knowledge.

Aim

The aim of the course is that the students are to attain deep basic understanding in thermodynamics and flow mechanics. The level of understanding should be good enough to solve engineering problems in this field.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe the basic concept of thermodynamics and the laws of thermodynamics.
  • describe basic equations of state, the properties of real and ideal substances and ideal cycles like the heat engine and the Carnot cycles.
  • explain the basic equations used in fluid mechanics like the Bernoulli equation, the energy equation for a steady flow system and the linear momentum equation.
  • describe laminar and turbulent flow, crucial aspects of flow in pipes and flow over bodies.
  • apply the first law of thermodynamics on various engineering devices and solve problem including energy conversion and efficiencies.
  • apply the ideal gas equation of state and determine changes of state.
  • apply property tables and diagrams for real substances.
  • solve basic engineering problems and handle various manometers and flow measuring equipment.

Content

The thermodynamic part includes the laws of thermodynamics, interactions between heat and work, state properties and ideal cycles like heat engine and the Carnot cycle. The fluid mechanics part deals with the basic equations such as; the continuity equation, Bernoullis equations. The theory is applied on; various flow regimes, measuring methods for pressure and flow and pipe flow.

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, exercises with problem solving demonstrations and laboratory lessons.

Literature

Cengel/Turner, Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Mc Graw Hill.
The latest edition will be used in the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined by a written exam.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
