Course specific prerequisites

The courses LMA401/MVE575 Calculus and MVE580/MVE570 Linear algebra and differential equations, or corresponding knowledge.

Aim

The aim of the course is that the students are to attain knowledge of the basic principles and concepts of classical mechanics (mainly in statics), which is required for further studies in the field of mechanical engineering.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe the basic concepts and laws of classical mechanics. Apply these laws and concepts in solving problems.
  • express force as a vector and apply necessary vector algebra for analyses.
  • solve equilibrium problems  in two and three dimensions.
  • determine the center of mass for various bodies.
  • describe the concepts of work, energy, linear momentum and angular momentum.
  • formulate the mathematical model for a given mechanical system and carry out the analysis.

Content

  • Statics: Fundamental concepts. Force systems and reduction of force systems. Conditions of equilibrium, free-body diagrams, system determinacy and indeterminacy. Centre of mass, centre of gravity. Friction.  
  • Dynamics of particles: Particle kinematics and kinetics; equations of motion; linear and angular momentum; energy; conservation laws;  work

The course includes lectures and tutorials (70 h) and independent studies (130h)

Examination including compulsory elements

The examination is based on a written exam, grades TH. 

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
