Course specific prerequisites

The courses LMA401/MVE575 Calculus and MVE580/MVE570 Linear algebra and differential equations, or corresponding knowledge.

Aim

The aim of the course is that the students are to attain knowledge of the basic principles and concepts of classical mechanics (mainly in statics), which is required for further studies in the field of mechanical engineering.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe the basic concepts and laws of classical mechanics. Apply these laws and concepts in solving problems.
  • handle the force as a vector and the necessary vector algebra.
  • solve problems on equilibrium in two and three dimensions.
  • determine the center of mass for various bodies.
  • describe the concepts of work, energy, linear momentum and angular momentum.
  • formulate the mathematical model for a given mechanical system and carry out the analysis.

Content

Fundamental concepts. Force systems and reduction of force systems. Conditions of equilibrium, free-body diagrams, statical determinacy and indeterminacy. Centre of mass, centre of gravity. Friction. Kinematics of particles. Kinetics of particles.

The course includes 35 lectures.
