Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Knowledge equivalent to the content in the course LMA515 Mathematics or in the courses MVE530 Introductory course in mathematics, MVE525 Calculus and MVE520 Linear algebra.

Aim

The course will give knowledge in how mathematical expressions and mathematic tools can be used in chemical engineering practice in different applications. Mathematical modeling of different phenomena will be emphasized.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • be aware of different levels of models
  • set up simple mathematical models for chemical engineering problems
  • have introductory skills in the use of MatLab to solve mathematical problems
  • Content

The course will give a first glimpse of the use of mathematics to handle engineering tasks, and how different types of models may be used in different situations. This will be illustrated in a project, where suitable mathematical models for a chemical engineering problem will be set up and used. In the course especially two different models will be discussed:

  • Empirical models (fitting parameters to given data).
  • Theoretical models (derived from differential equations). There will also be examples of some other mathematical items. MatLab will be the tool used to handle the different mathematical problems encountered. For that reason there will be compulsory exercises using this tool, partly adapted to support the project. This course is not intended to be a complete course in the use of MatLab for solving chemical engineering problems, rather as a basis for the ability to acquire more skills by the use of it in later courses.
  • Organisation

The main part of the course is a project, which is supported by lectures and excercises. There are also compulsory computer exercises using MatLab.

    Literature

Will be announced at the course start.

    Examination including compulsory elements

The examination will be as a project presentation, both oral and written. To pass the course, the project and compulsory exercises has to be completed. The course grade will be passed/not passed.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
