Eligibility
General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Specific entry requirements
The same as for the programme that owns the course.Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Course specific prerequisites
The courses LMA401 Calculus and MVE580 Linear algebra and differential equations, or corresponding knowledge.Aim
The course aims to provide mechatronics students with the electrical engineering fundamental base they need to analyze and design mechatronic and embedded systems.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- use basic nomenclature within the electrical engineering field.
- communicate about problems within the subject area.
- perform basic analysis of DC circuits * do simple analysis of AC circuits in time and frequency domain.
- describe the functions and applications of the most used semiconductor components such as diodes, bipolar transistors and operational amplifiers.
- dimension and analyze simple passive and active filters.
- do measurements at simple amplifier and filter circuits.
Content
- Basic concepts, Kirchhoffs laws, resistance reductions, voltage and current division.
- Ideal two-terminal components. voltage and current two-terminals.
- Node analysis. Graphic solution for nonlinear components.
- Diodes, rectifier. Voltage stabilization with zener diode.
- Bipolar transistors.
- Basic connections with operational amplifiers.
- Phasor diagram, complex method, complex impedance.
- Frequency and amplitude functions for linear systems.
- Inductors (coil), capacitors, on-and-off couplings of them.
- Basic symmetric three-phase systems.
- The laboratory course includes practical exercises and simulation tasks with some simulation program based on Spice in order to
- verify the theory,
- highlight measurement issues,
- provide practical component knowledge,
- use basic numerical tool for design and analysis.
Organisation
Teaching by lectures, theoretical exercises and laboratory experiments. The theory part includes 6 p and laboratory course 1.5 p.Literature
E1: Kretsanalys (Bill Karlström)E2: Extra Chapters (Bill Karlström/Jian Yang)
Examination including compulsory elements
The theory part is examined by written examination. The laboratories with pre-lab exercises examine the more practical aims.In the middle of the course a voluntary written test (dugga) is offered, which can give bonus points on the exam. Bonus points can be given for other activities. The bonus points can be used at the written exam and is added to the exam points.
The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
