Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Passed the course LET086 Control technology or LEU076 Control Project or equivalent.

Aim

This course will provide knowledge of the structure, performance and programming of control systems and supervisory control equipments in production processes. The course is conducted as a project to make the student familiar with most of the different parts of a industrial automation project. The course also encourage to seek knowledge from suppliers and industry contacts.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • in a project organisation plan, implement and follow up an engineering project
  • realize an automation system for a manufacturing plant from a given specification
  • in a project group carry out the design of an automation system including programmable controllers and operator interface working together in an industrial communication network
  • design electric schematics from given specifications
  • describe important parts of a development project
  • describe how a modern control system is designed regarding its functions and network configurations

Content

A manufacturing equipment in laboratory scale is going to be equipped with control systems and supervisory control systems which means: Work in project form which includes making specification, time- and responsibility documents and quality assurance documents, structuring of problem, fault effect analysis (FMEA), cost calculation, milestone reporting, implementation, documentation and delivery of the production plant. Structured programming of industrial control system. Design of process interface and programming of human-machine interaction. Configuration of communication network. Design of electric schematics in CAD program

Organisation

The main part of the course is arranged in project form where a project group of about 8 students should plan and make solutions for a given problem in the same way as this type of problem would be handled in the industry. Each project group has at least 50 hours access to the course adapted laboratory where an instructor is available most of the time. Labs scheduled for the group are compulsory. In parallell to the project there are 12 lectures. They give knowledge useful for the realization of the project but also information about technology in the industrial automation field.

Literature

Osbeck, Hult: Styrteknik, PLC (compendium published at the course website).
Osbeck, Olesen: Styr- och övervakningssystem (compendium published at the course website).
Manuals and reference literature presented on the course website and also sought by the student themselves.

Examination including compulsory elements

Projekt group: passed implementation and project report. Individual: presence during compulsory activities, passed results on individual tests and tasks implemented into the course, and passed result on written test. The project work is supervised and observed continuously by the teacher. Grading U, 3,4,5.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
