The courses LEU432 Introduction to computer engineering and LEU471 Electrical circuits, or equivalent competence.Aim
The aim of this course is to give the student knowledge about methods and equipment for binary control of processes and machines. The main part of the course is a work in project form where the students starts from a function specification and continue with designing, troubleshooting and testing a construction of some cooperating hardware and software components. In the end of the project the students get exercise in presentation and report writing.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- work in a group to plan and realize a joint project,
- present logic solutions for two different types of controllers: programmable logic controller (PLC) and microcontroller (MCU),
- manage program environments and design control programs for PLC and microcontroller,
- design components and circuit diagrams and realize the electric circuits for signal conversion,
- troubleshoot and verify the function.

Content
- Project planning and project realization.
- Basic structure of automation, control and monitoring systems.
- Design and function of microcontroller (MCU) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
- Programming of PLC in the languages FBD and SFC. Programming of MCU in C.
- Signal conversion between the two control units, sensors and actuators.
- Troubleshooting of own and other students' electrical circuits and programs.
- Written and oral assignments geared towards report writing and project documentation, strategies for effective communication and oral presentation skills.
- A process-oriented approach to writing which means that the text is written in several steps, and that peer response work and individual reflection are important tools for developing the text.
Organisation
The main part of the course is arranged as a project in groups of normally two students. The project work is conducted in laboration rooms with necessary hardware and necessary preparations at home with use of simulators. At scheduled project sessions in laboratory rooms attendance is compulsory. Between the sessions in laboratory room, voluntary scheduled supervision sessions are given for the preparations at home. During the course there are lectures and one guest lecture. At the guest lecture attendance is compulsory. The lectures present the fundamentals needed for the project task, the written report and the oral presentation. The course concludes with a written report and oral presentation of the project. The language training part of the course is organized in compulsory seminars and workshops.Literature
