The student should be oriented about:
- concepts, working methods and strategies in modern drug development, both with respect to small molecules and proteins as drugs.
- Comprehend specific strengths and weaknesses of different genetic model organisms used in target discovery
- Evaluate the significance of genetic differences between patients in individualised drug therapy
- Interpret structural information about drug targets in the context of interactions with small molecules
- Understand fundaments of small molecule screening models
- Give accounts of the challenges met by drugs that have recently come to the market
Content
This course shall focus on a building an overall understanding of the discovery and development of novel pharmaceuticals (drug discovery/development), covering a wide spectrum of target selection, lead discovery/optimization, nonclinical in vitro/in vivo safety and efficacy studies, clinical trials, and market authorization. Examples are also given of existing drugs, how they have been developed, and their mechanisms of action. The course is mostly theoretical, but in certain parts, practical demonstrations are also included.Organisation
