Aim

The course aims to give an opportunity to see how the newly acquired knowledge in chemical engineering can be used in an industrial situation, in cooperation with companies in the chemical, chemical engineering, material and energy sectors. The course also aims at giving an insight in the future professional role and a chance to reflect on career choices. As this course is given in project form, it will also give insights in group dynamics and project planning.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • To be able to translate a problem/issue from the industry into a project with planning, implementation and final reporting, all steps linked to a schedule.
  • See opportunities and take an active role in the various aspects of the project and be responsible for video meetings / online
  • Apply methods for planning and working effectively in a group.
  • Reflect on own experiences from group activities both during and after the project
  • Give and constructively process written and oral feedback
  • Gain deeper insight into the professional role of the engineer

Content

For each group, a company will present a project proposal and state their issue/problem/project idea that they want the students to get involved in. The theme for the projects can be within a broad spectrum, e.g. the function of various equipment, durability, process schedules, new raw materials, process safety, etc. The projects can also have an innovation/product structure: Application/idea ➔ Presentation ➔ Marketing.

The supervision will be handled by supervisors from Chalmers, but the company contacts who work within the projects are also helpful in acting as a mentor and providing the information you need. This course will contain real problems and/or ideas that companies are interested in finding a solution to or gaining new input on how they can take the next step.

The project course will end with a short report and oral presentation, where the companies will participate and listen/ask questions about the work you have performed. As the course will contain a digital focus, for example in the form of video meetings and other digital communication, the final reporting may be performed online.

Organisation

The course is divided into two parts: a planning part (1.5 credits) during study period 1 and an implementation part (3 credits) during study period 2. The course structure will have a rough schedule as follows; a planning phase in September / October, a work phase in November and a reporting phase in December. The work will for the most part be carried out in groups and planned individually in the various groups (in consultation with the respective supervisor). Joint class activities will mainly be a kickoff lecture, group activity elements, rehearsal including oral "peer review" and final reporting.

Examination including compulsory elements

Examination will occur continuously in groups through the following steps, documented in a project diary:

  • Conduct at least 2 online meetings in the group where the supervisor is invited
  • Write minutes of all group meetings
  • Perform a rehearsal in front of other students
  • Give oral feedback at the rehearsals
  • Report your results and conclusions both through a final report and at a presentation for both supervisor, examiner and the company (can be performed either via video meeting or physically).
  • Write a contribution report. This is written individually for each student.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
