To give the student an understanding of chemical processes and knowledge about a variety of chemical applications and their impact on daily life, industry and environment. The course is comparable to upper secondary school Chemistry A.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Chemical reactions and energy transformations.
- How to plan and perform experimental work.
- Different safety aspects of laboratory work.
Content
The course consists of two parts, theory and a practical work part. Course content:- Characteristics of atoms, molecules and ions.
- The periodic table and its elements.
- Electromagnetic radiation and materia.
- Chemical bonding and physical and chemical properties.
- Stoichiometry and chemical reactions and chemical equilibrium.
- Strong and weak acids and bases, neutralization, pH and buffer solutions.
- Oxidation and reduction.
- Chemical reactions: enthalpy and entropy.
- Fundamental organic chemistry.
- Environmental science.
- Modern materials and industrial applications.
- Experimental studies.
- Energy and the environment.
- General organic chemistry.
- Modern materials.
Organisation
The course will consist of lectures, exercise classes, and laboratory projects. Lectures and exercises are normally given online. Laboratory exercises are performed partly online, but generally also at two occasions at Campus.Literature

Written examination, both digitally and on campus, as well as approved laboratory projects. Final grade: U. 3. 4. or 5. Completed course corresponds to depth and content at least the upper secondary school's course Chemistry 1.The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers about disability study support.
