Course specific prerequisites
General knowledge in chemistry corresponding to Kemi med biokemi (KBT250, KBT255, KBT260, General chemistry). Knowledge of organic chemistry corresponding to Oorganisk och organisk kemi (KOK081, Inorganic and organic chemistry).Aim
- provide a deeper understanding of the field of organic chemistry in terms of mechanistic aspects
- expand the student's repertoire of organic reactions, covering newer topics such as organometallic chemistry, pericyclic reactions, organic photochemistry, radical reactions, asymmetric synthesis, organic reactions involving amines and phosphorus compounds, as well as carbon-carbon bond formation
- provide experimental skills in synthetic organic chemistry and analysis of organic compounds
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- be able to propose reaction mechanisms for reactions covered in the course and expand this knowledge further to other organic reactions
- be able to suggest a multi-step synthesis of a small organic molecule
- have the ability to carry out a multi-step organic synthesis in practice, including the handling of air-sensitive compounds
- have knowledge and practical experience of different purification techniques used in organic synthesis
- have the capacity to analyse products from an organic reaction using 1H NMR and IR techniques
- have some insight into the organic chemistry literature, and be able to write an experimental part of a paper according to literature standards
Content
Formation of carbon-carbon bonds, pericyclic reactions, organic photochemistry, organometallic chemistry, organocatalysis, asymmetric synthesis and reactions involving phosphorus-, boron- and nitrogen-containing reagents. The students will also work with selected modern methods for organic synthesis in the laboratory.Organisation
The course is given in the form of lectures, tutorials and a laboratory part. The laboratory part consists of a multi-step synthesis to be carried out in groups of two.Literature
