Course specific prerequisites
Prerequisites corresponding to eligibility.Aim
Provide background for continued studies in bioscience.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Apply the common models for chemical bonding and intermolecular interactions to the structure and properties of biological molecules.
- Perform thermodynamic and simple chemical kinetic calculations on biological systems.
- Understand the principles of enzymatic kinetics.
- Be familiar with the most common oxidation and reduction reactions in biological systems.
Content
Fundamental biochemistry, application of chemical concepts on biological systems and macromolecules, including the chemical bond, intermolecular interactions, thermodynamics and chemical kinetics.Organisation
The course is run in close connection with Chemistry and biochemistry for Bt1 and K1.
Quarter 1
Overview lecture on Biochemistry
Quarter 2
Three lectures on Biochemistry
Three tutorials involving about 30 students, where three handouts are solved.
Quarter 3
Two laborations, one on DNA and one on proteins
