Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Physical chemistry. It is recommended with knowledge in inorganic and organic chemistry.

Aim

The course aims to provide basic knowledge of analytical-chemical nomenclature, methodology, instrumentation and data processing with emphasis on industrial commonly used applications.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • use the most commonly used instruments in chemical analysis and the procedure used for solving problems in chemical analysis.
  • use their basic knowledge of analytical chemistry to quickly learn and handle other analytical chemistry techniques.

Content

In this course, lectures will cover theory for quantitative chemical analysis. The concepts are presented of analytical nomenclature, precision, sensitivity, detection limit and dynamical range.

Included is also chemical analysis methods, electroanalytical methods: pH and other ion-selective measurements, electrochemical trace analysis.

Atom spectroscopy analysis methods: flame emission spectroscopy, atom spectroscopy technique.

Molecular spectroscopy analysis techniques: ultraviolet and visible light (UV/VIS), near infrared- (NIR-) and fluorescence measurements, including laser-based techniques.

Analytical separation techniques: gas-, liquid-, and ion chromatography, supercritical chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and detection techniques including mass spectroscopy.
