Specific entry requirements

English 6 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Required is a basic knowledge in materials science and engineering

Aim

Materials are in the middle of the technical development of the future products and processes that will meet the requirements and challenges the society are facing. Opportunities and challenges are plenty on both micra and macro level. The purpose of the course is to develop the understanding of the connection and interdependence between the trends in the societal challenges, eg. Sustainability, circularity and lack of critical elements, company strategic options for products and processes, with the trends in material development.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- describe the different challenges and their critical parts
- describe the design strategy
- relate the new material concepts to the material's properties and microstructure
- comment on application limits and exemplify some of the trade-offs involved
- describe strategies/innovation potential of different industries/companies
- analyze technological innovations and markets and understand how this will affect our society

Content

Technical challenges and new material concepts will be discussed using examples from the latest developments and ongoing research. The impact of these future trends on society and materials research will be discussed.

Organisation

The course will be divided into lectures, home assignment/exercises, and project work. Moreover, a series of presentations will be given by company representatives.

Literature

Specific literature will be mentioned/handed out during the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

A written exam and an approved project work (graded) is required for passing the course.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
