Course specific prerequisites

A course in basic Mechanics.

Aim

This course will provide a basic skill in materials selection and some understanding of how material properties change at different manufacturing processes. In addition, the course provides a basic understanding of plastic forming and machining of metals, the two most important manufacturing processes.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Be able to describe the materials and manufacturing processes most important to the manufacturing industry.
  • Be able to describe the properties and applications of the most important materials.
  • Be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of the most common manufacturing methods.
  • Be able to make a material and process choice with CES (Cambridge engineering selector)
  • Be able to analyze the relationships between choice of material, choice of manufacturing process, and how it affects the final product.
  • Be able to assess different materials and processes in terms of technical performance, economy and sustainability
