English 5 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)

[Translation missing: page.coursepage.prerequisites]

Priority is given to students who have a basic to intermediate level of English and who feel a need to practise speaking and writing in English.

[Translation missing: page.coursepage.purpose]

The aim of the course is to prepare students who need to use English in their studies at Chalmers and to strengthen their communicative competence. The course is intended mainly for basic to intermediate students who need to strengthen their ability to speak, write and understand English.

[Translation missing: page.coursepage.goal]

  • express himself/herself clearly in both speech and writing in prepared situations.
  • select, structure and present material from his/her field of study to a non-specialist audience in a clear and effective manner.
  • understand, summarise and reformulate the main content of oral presentations and lectures in speech and writing
  • apply a process-oriented approach when working with texts and oral presentations

[Translation missing: page.coursepage.content]

Oral proficiency will be practised through discussions, presentation assignments, and pronunciation tasks. Special attention will be given to accurate pronunciation, stress and intonation.

The students will give several presentations in pairs or small groups and will be asked to summarise the content of other students' presentations in both speech and writing. Phraseology and the structuring of oral presentations will therefore be introduced in the course.

Written proficiency will be practised through the writing of short texts.

Other parts of the course will include some training of English grammar, phonology and vocabulary.

[Translation missing: page.coursepage.organization]

The course runs over two quarters. Most activities are carried out asynchronously but there will be four or five meetings synchronously (in class or online) which may consist of lectures, workshops and practice exercises. Students will be given exercises and assignments to prepare and/or complete between classes. Active participation is fundamental.
