Eligibility
General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Specific entry requirements
The same as for the programme that owns the course.Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Course specific prerequisites
Courses in thermodynamics, transport phenomena in chemical engineering and introductory chemical engineering.Aim
The aim of the course is to provide course participants with knowledge of a chemical process plant's energy system and its components, including boilers, heat exchangers, compressors and turbines. The course also discusses the interplay between industry and the surrounding energy system as well as how the latter affects industrys possibility to contribute to sustainable development. The course includes basic methods for sizing key components in industrial energy systems, and knowledge from previous courses regarding e.g. cogeneration and heat transfer is applied and extended. The course also introduces basic concepts of combustion engineering. Finally, the aim of the course is to emphasize the role of the aforementioned areas in the professional role of chemical engineers, as well as preparing students for advanced courses within the energy area.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- describe an industrial plant's energy system, particularly the operation of its major components, including boilers, heat exchangers, compressors and turbines.
- perform basic design and evaluation of industrial energy systems and CHP plants fired with gaseous or solid fuels.
- apply basic concepts and theory for heat transfer in connection with evaporation, condensation and radiation.
- perform basic design and evaluation of heat exchangers and turbo-machinery.
- perform basic design and evaluation of technical combustion systems and apply this to industrial processes.
- quantify and analyse energy flows between an industrial process plant and the surrounding energy system
- discuss sustainability aspects of relevance for industrial energy systems
- discuss limitations and ethical issues related to operation of energy conversion processes and fuels as well as technologies for minimizing environmental impact of industrial energy systems
