Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Courses in thermodynamics, transport phenomena in chemical engineering and introductory chemical engineering.

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide future chemical engineers knowledge of a chemical process plant's energy system and its components, including boilers, heat exchangers, compressors and turbines. Easier dimensioning of various components are conducted, where knowledge from previous courses around e.g. cogeneration and heat transfer are applied, extended and partially deepened, while new areas such as combustion technology is introduced.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe an industrial plant's energy system, particularly the operation of its major components, including boilers, process furnaces, heat exchangers, compressors and turbines.
  • perform basic design and evaluation of industrial energy systems and CHP plants based on combustion of gaseous or solid fuels.
  • apply basic concepts and theory for heat transfer in connection with evaporation, condensation and radiation.
  • perform basic design and evaluation of heat exchangers and turbo-machinery.
  • perform basic design and evaluation of technical combustion systems and apply this to industrial processes.

Content

A process industry's energy system and its components, e.g. boilers, fired heaters, heat exchangers, compressors and turbines. Applied engineering thermodynamics, especially combined heat and power production. Heat transfer theory, convection, boiling, condensation and radiation. Heat exchanger technology. Applied combustion theory.

Organisation

The tutor lead education includes: lectures, exercise, project assignments, laboratory exercises and study visit.

Literature

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined through approved written examination together with approved project assignments and laboratory exercises. Approved written exams are graded with grade 3, 4 or 5.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
