Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

English 6 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

This course is addressed to students without a background in electrical engineering.

Aim

The overall aim of this course is that the student will show an understanding of the function of an electricity delivering system and what possibilities and limitation that such system has.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Describe the function of an electric power systems, both DC and 3 phase AC systems.
  • Describe the function of the main components in an electric power system.
  • Formulate and conduct basic electric circuit¿s analysis for DC, AC and 3 phase systems.
  • Formulate and solve power flow analysis problem with use of simulator tools.
  • Perform basic reliability studies of electric power systems.
  • Explain the function of grid operation.
  • Summarize and explain the demands of an electric power system for connection.
  • Argue about sustainability on electric power systems.
  • Describe and give examples of central concepts in smart grids.
  • Describe and follow safety instructions in the electric power engineering lab in the course.

Content

The course content is divided into four parts: 1. Introduction to electric power systems and its components and main concept 2. The fundamentals of electric circuit analysis for both DC and AC. 3. Analysis of electric power systems through studies of the themes like electric power system analysis, HVDC, operation of electric power systems, reliability and connection regulations. 4. Discussions on future challenges for the electric power system and how it can be part of a sustainable energy system. The course consists of a practical lab, a design exercise and a short essay on sustainable development. Before performing the practical lab, the safety instructions must be read, understood and followed. The design exercise is concluded with a report that shall answers to the questions in the assignment PM.

Organisation

The course comprises of lectures, tutorials, one practical laboratory exercise, supervision for the design exercise at 6 occasions and a seminar per subject of the essay.

Literature

Power System - Analysis & Design (6th edition, SI version), J. Duncan Glover, Thomas J. Overbye and Mulukutla S. Sarma, Cengage Learning, ISBN-13:987-1-305-63618-7

Introduction to Electric Circuits (1995), Ray Powel, Elservier Ltd, ISBN-13: 978-0-340-63198-0.

Complementary lecture material, exercises and laboratory PM will be made available.

Examination including compulsory elements

The methods used to evaluate the students work in this course are:

 Written examination
 Approved practical laboratory exercise
Approved report of the design exercise
Short essay on sustainability in electric power systems
The grade in the course will be based on written examination, design exercise and essay.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
