Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

The students shall be capable of using a systematic method to design a system, model and understand its function, such that they can sizes its components and understand how the system works in different situations. They shall also understand how the users will experience the system.
They shall demonstrate that they  can describe and motivate a system i a structured manor, both orally and in writing, and they shall be able to cooperate in an organized manor in their groups in order to design the system.

Content

The course is focused on 4 larger hand-in assignments, which step by step go through the system design and analysis process. The lectures presents the method to design, analyze and verify the system and provide the necessary background for doing the project assignments. The project assignments are done in groups, with the purpose of the students trying to design a system based on their own design specification.

Important steps in this are:
- Derive a design specification in a structured way
- Define a system solution which is appropriate for its purpose.
- Size system mechanical parts, electric drive system, actuators and sensors based on the functional requirements.
- Build matematical models of the system, in form of static models and some dynamic models, to verify the system design.
- Describe the task of the control systems function, in terms of how the users can interact with the system and how sensors are used for feedback control.
- Build a functional prototype which can be used to verify some of the systems functions.

Parallel with the above steps, there are lectures and exercises in communication and group dynamics, which teaches skills that shall be used in the design project and in the assignments and project presentation.

Organisation

- approx. 14 lectures
- 4 hand-in assignments done in the project groups (obligatory)
- approx. 12 Project supervision sessions for the project assignments, in which the group shall present and discuss their solutions with the supervisor. (Obligatory. However, some single occasions may be missed if there are good reasons)
- 4 Peer-review sessions in which the hand-in assignments are discussed with one other group. (Obligatory)
- 1 project presentation session (Obligatory)

Literature

No course book is used. The course material for how to work with system design is presented at the lectures and is distributed via the course homepage.
Also, course material from previous courses may be very useful support when solving the assignments.

Examination including compulsory elements

The examination is based on
- the own groups hand-in assignments,
- discussion of the own assignments and another groups assignments at the peer-review sessions,
- the project presentation session.

There is no written examination in the course.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
