EEN080 Introductory course in biomedical engineering, EEN085 Medicine for engineers.Aim
The purpose of the course is to provide an introductory and general orientation in digital health and its role in society and societal development. Important application areas addressed are Electronic Health Records (EHRs) management, standards & interoperability, ethics and regulatory requirements, clinical decision support, apps and remote care. A specific purpose is to train the ability to design a smartphone app that meets the requirements of patients, caregivers and authorities.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
2. Describe the role and consequences of digital health in yesterday's, today's and tomorrow's health care environment.
3. Reflect on opportunities and challenges with digital health and its impact on society as a whole.
4. Explain the importance of ethical considerations, legislation, regulatory requirements and patient integrity when designing and implementing digital health solutions.
5. Describe some important international standards applicable to digital health and explain the need for standardization and interoperability between different systems.
6. Design an app primarily for smartphones for a selected group of users (usually patients) that meets the user's needs and desires while being realistic to implement by judging that requirements from healthcare professionals and authorities can be met, and that data management and communication for the app is designed so that the app can be more easily integrated into healthcare.
7. Work in a structured way together in groups and document planning and progress.
8. Demonstrate and motivate a product to patients and caregivers through videos.
Content
The course contains basic knowledge about digital health and discusses how it is about to fundamentally develop and change the previously primarily hospital-based care. Among other things, the following concepts will be addressed:Electronic Health Records (EHRs) management
Standards for communication and handling of health data (eg HL7, FHIR, openEHR)The role of ethics in digital health
Regulatory requirements for medical devices based on software
Clinical decision support
How artificial intelligence opens up new opportunities and challenges
Remote care
Adapt communication to different recipient groups and communication channels
Organisation
The responsible department is the Department of Electrical Engineering.The teaching is given in the form of lectures as well as lessons / demonstrations / laboratory work / seminars in small groups. A project work is carried out to design an app that will be presented in two videos, one for the targeted patient / user group and one for the care provider. More detailed information will be given on the course website before the start of the course.

The course is examined with a written exam at the end of the course. Quizzes in connection with lectures are voluntary and can give bonus points on the exam.The project is examined by several teachers assessing the potential of the app to achieve the intended goals and how effective the films are judged to attract the target groups.
The individual grade for each student is set by weighing together grades from the exam and the project work.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
