Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

The courses LEU471 Electrical circuits and SSY020 Linear systems, or equivalent knowledge.

Aim

A mechatronic system is typically equipped with one or more sensors which measure the state of the process being controlled. In order to influence the process electric, pneumatic or hydraulic actuators are used. The course aims to provide experience and knowledge of these components and their properties in a system.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe and explain the principle of sensors and actuators, common in the process industry.
  • perform calculations in simple sensor circuits.
  • use sensors for measuring different physical parameters.
  • use different signal converters.
  • make simple calculations on DC- and AC-motors.
  • use drive systems for DC- and AC-motors.
  • use basic pneumatic components.
  • evaluate and select relevant material for oral presentation
  • plan, develop and deliver a formal oral presentation in English

Content

  • Basic measuring technology.
  • Sensors for measuring non-electric physical parameters.
  • Basic signal processing and signal transmission.
  • Different actuators, especially different electrical motors such as DC-, AC-, and stepping motors in theory and practice.
  • Drive systems for DC- and AC-motors.
  • Basic pneumatics.
  • Presentation skills in English

Organisation

The course is given as lectures, classroom exercises, lab work and oral presentation.
Exercises in English, lab work and oral presentation have compulsory attendance

Literature

Course compendia and material distributed via the course web page.

Examination including compulsory elements

A pass grade in the course requires approved written exam, attendance at exercises and labs where attendance is compulsory, approved lab work, and approved oral presentation.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
