Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

No specific course requirements. Only basic eligibility for college studies.

Aim

The aim of the course is to provide an introductory and general orientation within various biomedical engineering systems and their application in diagnostics, treatment and monitoring. The purpose is further to provide an understanding of the practical use of these systems through study visits to hospital and through laboratory exercises. Students will extend their knowledge about a selected medical device via a project work.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

1, be able to describe basic biomedical engineering systems and methods.
2, be able to describe the principles for some common systems and their use in healthcare.
3, work in a group project with a specified challenge, understand a solution and investigate it.
4, outline challenges for sustainable health care and what characterizes an economically and socially sustainable health care.

Content

Ethics, morality and patient safety
Economically and socially sustainable healthcare.
Basics in bioinstrumentation
Medical signals
Medical imaging methods
Medical image analysis
Treatment methods

Project
- Project about a particular medical device.  Detailed information is provided at the beginning of the course

Laboratory
- ECG lab

Demonstrations
- 2 practical demonstrations at hospital

Organisation

The teaching is given in the form of lectures and classes in smaller groups as well as in demonstrations and labs. The course also includes a group work. Detailed information is provided on the course's website before the start of the course.

Literature

Linden M & Åke Öberg P, ”Jacobsons Medicin och Teknik”, Studielitteratur. Upplaga 5:4. ISBN 978-91-44-04760-7

Examination including compulsory elements

A written exam in the end of the course. Attendance at demonstrations and laboratory work is required. The final grade is given as a weighted average of the grade on the written test and the grade on the project. To obtain the final grade, all examination elements must be approved.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
