Aim

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to the subject of mechatronics and the possible careers for engineers in mechatronics. The course also provides training in group work, information search and written and oral communication and introduces key ethical concepts and theories.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • cooperate in a group to design and build a mechatronic system.
  • program simple functions in a mechatronic system.
  • create composite 3-dimensional models and 2-dimensional detail drawings in a modern CAD system.
  • interpret a machine drawing regarding views, sections and dimensions.
  • analyze and discuss ethical issues at a basic level, including aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • set the concept of sustainable development in a societal context and report its connection to an economically, socially and environmentally responsible engineering work.
  • reflect on possibilities and risks of digitalization and automation.
  • use different study skills.
  • reflect on treatment, communication and interaction in group work from an inclusive perspective.
  • reflect on their own performance in the group work and on conflict situations in groups of different composition
  • effectively search for and use qualitative information in books and journals, as well as cite references correctly.
  • write a well disposed essay containing critical review.
  • provide constructive feedback on other students' essays as well as on other students' drawings.

Content

Basic programming, sensors, electronic components, technical drawings, CAD, ethical dilemma with a mechatronics perspective, literature search, technical communication, group work, group dynamics, study skills, the global goals for a sustainable development and how they are connected to mechatronics.

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, guest lectures, exercises, project work, workshops, and hand-in assignments. Exercises, guest lectures, workshops, and the scheduled project sessions for the group are compulsory.

Examination including compulsory elements

Pass grade in the course requires:

Active attendance at compulsory activities

Grade: Non-pass / pass for each moment and for the entire course

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
