Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Calculus in one variable. Differential equations. Complex numbers. Linear algebra.

Aim

The course should provide fundamental knowledge about methods for analysis of analog electric circuits. This includes knowledge about properties of common passive circuit elements, sources and operational amplifiers. A background to the properties of different circuit elements in terms of magnetic fields should also be given.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • analyse basic passive linear circuits and circuits with operational amplifiers
  • use methods for analysis of DC- and AC circuits (Direct current and Alternating current) to calculate current, voltage and power
  • use a computer based tool for circuit analysis
  • perform basic field calculations based on simple geometries

  • Content

Electrical circuits. Circuit elements. Ohms law. Kirchhoff s laws. Power and energy. Methods for network analysis. Steady state circuits, DC and AC. Transients. Frequency response and Bode plots. Operational amplifier. Electromagnetic fields with selected applications. Laboratory course including manual calculations, computer aided analysis, practical design and verification by measurements.

    Organisation

Lectures, demonstartion exercises, open exercises and a laboratory course.

    Literature

    Text book: See course web-page

    Examination including compulsory elements

The following elements shall be passed:
    • Written exam
    • Laboratory assignments

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
