CIU200 - Technical communication 1

Aim

The course Technical Communication 2 aims to strengthen the ability of the students to communicate, both in oral and written form, in the field of chemical and biological engineering. The course aims also, to some extent, to prepare the students for their diploma work.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After completing the course, the student should be able to:
  • critically read and reflect upon academic, scientific texts
  • design and develop outline a project idea for an elementary research task, or some other scientific investigation in chemistry and/or biotechnology
  • orally present a project idea in English 
  • compose a well-written academic text in English, with focus on text-specific characteristics and academic reference systems.
  • give feedback to other students' oral and written project presentations

Content

The course gives opportunity to practice and improve communication skills in English. All learning activities aim to improve understanding of the micro- and macro-structures of the academic text. The course literature, which consists of previously published degree projects and academic articles in the subject area, is used as a starting point for reflection, and critical reading and review. Based on the selected literature, students design their own project proposals that are presented both orally and in writing. The proposals are developed iteratively and eventually turn into a potential project idea. The project proposals are reviewed mainly with regard to structure and linguistic correctness, but can be further developed together with a subject expert to be approved as a future degree project.

Organisation

The course is based on principles of writing processes and active learning. Students prepare for lessons, for example by reading or writing, and the lesson is used primarily for exercises, discussions and analyses. An important component of the course is that the students give each other feedback continuously. Exercises are carried out individually and/or in groups. Writing tasks are usually submitted in pairs.

Literature

Previously published degree projects in the subject area of chemistry and biotechnology, as well as scientific articles from the same subject area are to be provided by the examiner. In addition, the students will also search for course literature themselves. 

Examination including compulsory elements

The examination consists of:
  • written analysis of a previous thesis or a scientific article 
  • written project idea for a degree project 
  • short oral presentation of the same project idea as above
  • reflection on development of project idea

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
