Aim

The course aims at introducing engineering students to communication at university level with a focus on academic writing and to provide knowledge about the professional role of an engineer.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

• show basic knowledge in using writing in academic contexts,
• be familiar with and be able to apply essential strategies for text development,
• show the ability to collect information about a subject and present the information in short, objective and formal summaries, grounded in established research,
• reflect on the influence of education for personal development and future, professional life.

Content

The course contains the following activities:
• Communication and writing (writing as a craft): lectures and practice sessions with a focus on style and structure.
• Information literacy (Chalmers library)
• Exercises: individual or collaborative
• Presentations by professional engineers.

Organisation

The course includes lectures, exercises and individual work. Some activties are mandatory. See schedule/TimeEdit and Course PM for further information.

A mandatory seminar in information literacy is included in the course and is organised by the library's own staff. To pass this seminar, attendance is required and that the knowledge generated by this activity will be applied correctly in the examination assignments.

Obligatory engineering lectures that are connected to the examination assignments, are also included in the course. These are connected to the examination assignments.

Examination including compulsory elements

To pass this course, the following are required:

  • active participation in the course activtities
  • active attendance at the information literacy seminar
  • approved written assignments
  • attendance at the engineering lectures
The course is graded with Pass/Fail.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
