      Eligibility

General entry requirements for Master's level (second cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

      Specific entry requirements

English 6 (or by other approved means with the equivalent proficiency level)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

      Course specific prerequisites

To be eligible for this course, students must have successfully completed the courses TDA496 Interaction design methodologies, 7.5 credits, and TDA492 Graphical interfaces, 7.5 credits, or equivalent.

      Aim

The course provides the student with an opportunity to individually or in a smaller group (1-3 people) study something of relevance in the area of interaction design outside of the regular syllabus. The project can focus upon implementation of software as long as there is a clear connection to interaction design.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

      Knowledge and understanding
      • decide on content, structure and appropriate media format for a project report
      • use references in an academic text with different media formats, for example a text or a video

      Skills and abilities
      • independently carry out a small project in interaction design following established best practices and procedures in small projects in interaction design
      • document project work in a suitable form given the nature of the project
      • do appropriate literature and background research for a small project
      • verbally present a small interaction design project

      Judgement and approach
      • establish an appropriate scope for a project plan to make best possible use of all resources available, including skill sets and time
      • reflect upon potential societal issues and ethical problems that may arise from the result of the project

      Content

Students perform a research and/or development project. Suitable project ideas should be developed in collaboration with the supervisor and an internal or external client. Supervisor and internal client can be the same person. An external client cannot be supervisor. The project work should be based on a plan that is created in advance of the project start. The plan should contain goal of the project, planned process, and planned result.

Please note that registration to the course is done by the examiner and/or supervisor, not by the student.

      Organisation

Independent project work indiviudal or in small groups, with supervision and with contact with an internal or external client. The work shall start based upon the plan developed before the course starts, document how the work progresses, including any changes to the plan, and end with the production of a report. Note that all projects must have a client, either a research client (researcher at Chalmers or other university) or a client from a company or organization.

      Literature

Appropriate literature is decided for each project together with the supervisor.

      Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined via a project report in appropriate form (for example text or video), and a public presentation of the project, either as a oral presentation or as a poster exhibition showcasing the results of the project.

To pass the course when a group project is done, the individual student must have contributed in a substantial way to the final project results of the team, and must be able to explain their process, results, and the different team members' contribution.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
