Course specific prerequisites

Only students who are admitted to the Entrepreneurship and Business Design program are qualified to take the course, due to the strong integration with the lab-based pedagogy of the program. Students must have passed the course CIP058 in order to be qualified to take the course.

Aim

The purpose of the course is to give the student practical and hands-on experiences as well as a thorough theoretic knowledge on how patents are used to design innovations by defining and claiming the control of technical inventions. The creative element in IP design and IP creation is in focus.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Define and explain patents and other intellectual property rights as tools and building blocks in technological innovation processes.
- Explain and critically discuss patents and other intellectual property rights as elements in the value creation of technological innovations.
- Give examples of how processes for designing patents and other intellectual property rights forms the basis for strategic control positions in technology-based innovation processes.
- Be able to apply patent and other intellectual property information sources to identify and design technology and knowledge assets as property and portfolios of property for technological innovation processes.
- Be able to use and apply intellectual property information sources, and other external information, to evaluate technology and knowledge assets as resources and positions in product markets, technology markets and collaboration.
- Based on an intellectual property understanding, design and implement utilization processes and business strategies for technology-based value creation.
- Evaluate how technology development processes based on management of intellectual assets and property contribute to sustainable development of business and society.

Content

The aim of the course is to provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience in technology and technology-based innovation processes with a focus on management of technology and knowledge assets. The course focuses on how patents and other IPRs design the resource base, capacity to manage claims and organizing work, as well as implementing value creation models of technological innovations. Said capabilities are critical for entrepreneurs and other people in executive postions in order to facilitate strategic and sustainable decision making in knowledge-based business and operations.

Organisation

Teaching is in the form of lectures, seminars and group work. Students mainly work consist of identifying various types of technology-based innovation logics in order to assess how to claim innovations and control the key assets for the further utilization. A large part of the course is conducted through group work where students form interdisciplinary study groups. The teaching is based on role-play pedagogy that focus on roles, capabilities and norms in simulated innovation environments. The aim is to give students a holistic picture about the role of patents and other intellectual property rights, as well as other external information, in technology-based innovation processes.

Examination including compulsory elements

The students are graded based on their performances in the form of literature quizzes, written assignments, oral presentations, and participation in the seminars.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
