Eligibility
General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Specific entry requirements
The same as for the programme that owns the course.Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.
Course specific prerequisites
Ability to simpler mathematical analysis, knowledge of statistical distributions and risk analysis, knowledge and understanding of the mechanical properties of steel, wood and concrete, knowledge and understanding of basic concepts, theories and computational models of mechanics and solid mechanics. Such knowledge can for example be obtained by
BOM205 - Buildings functions and design

MVE495 - Mathematical statistics
BOM195 - Building materials
TME275 - Mechanics
TME300/TME295 - Solid mechanics
Aim
The course will give the student an extension within the topic structures for buildings and facilities. The course aims to provide comprehensive knowledge of how structures reacts under load and how they should be designed. A comprehensive understanding of the subject is important for all of engineers. The course is a continuation of the parts that dealt with the subject structural engineering in the course buildings functions and design. Furthermore, the course shows how mechanics, solid mechanics and building materials can be applied and gives a general overview of the area within the field structural engineering. Along with advanced courses in the subject skills are developed that engineers needs to be able to design and construct for instance bridges, houses or foundations.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
· Describe common materials used in structures and overall behavior of different types of structural elements and structures.· Identify necessary checks in calculation needed for common types of structures, structural systems and structural elements.
· Consider how outer factors such as time, moisture and load duration affects the strength and deformation at a design of timber, steel and concrete structures.
· Describe and explain the behavior of timber, steel and reinforced concrete beams subjected to bending moment and shear force.
· Form (by making rough calculations), design and check (problems with some open variables that means that choices and simpler assessments must be done) simple structural elements of timber, steel and reinforced concrete (such as beams, supports, braces and foundations) with respect to the moment and shear capacity in the ultimate limit state.
· At design apply computational models where the partial factor method (safety philosophy) is used for simpler load carrying systems, and describe the design process.
· With the help of sketches, with explanatory texts, create basis for the plans and specifications for the manufacture of load-bearing structural components.
· Describe expected differences and similarities between a modeled and an actual beam that is loaded to failure.
· Describe how structures are produced in the industry and how does a designer work.
Content
The course deals with the behavior of structural elements in timber, steel and reinforced concrete. A large part of the course deals with various failure mechanisms and instability phenomena; and computational models for analysis and design of the effects from bending and shear.
In the course safety philosophy is taken into account in the design of different structural elements, such as frame systems, bridges or foundations. In this design various common loads are considered. Finally, a section of how different types of construction works is included.
Later applications:
The course gives the necessary prerequisites, together with the course engineering, which is a direct continuation of this course, to the master's program "Structural Engineering and Building Technology". The course contents are applied in design and analysis of, for example, house frames, bridges and including the foundations to these.
Organisation
An essential part of the course consists of a design task that runs like a thread through the course to continually provide motivation for studies and learning. Teaching is mainly in the form of theory lectures, exercises where different models are demonstrated and design task where the students themselves can work with the models to connect theory and application. The course's laboratory, which is part of the progression of scientific methodology, students compare their calculations to an actual beam loaded to failure. Furthermore, a study trip where the students get to see how structures are produced in the industry and how designers work is included. Mathematics, engineering methodology and natural science will be applied naturally in the course.Literature

Examination including compulsory elements
The design task is examined continuously during the course. In the end of the course a written exam, including both basic theory and problem solving tasks is included. Compulsory attendance is required in laboratory experiment and study trip. Examination time 5 hours, grading TH.The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
