Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

BOM265 Building technology

Aim

The course should give basic knowledge on design and dimensioning of heating and ventilation systems. This includes systems for heating, cooling, ventilation, air conditioning and systems for potable and hot water. The course should provide basic understanding of the theoretical background for various systems and their function in practice.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Explain and understand consequences of various demands on indoor climate and work environment climate in form of required technical systems and resulting operational energy use
- Calculate the dimensioning of heating and cooling power demands and required ventilation air flow rates based on given demands on indoor climate
- Describe the structure of different types of heating and ventilations systems
- Clarify principles and function for automatic control systems
- Carry out the design of air conditioning due to demands for air humidity and air temperature

Content

The course can be divided in the following moments:
- The buildings heating and cooling demand.
- Construction of systems for ventilation and air conditioning.
- Construction of heating systems.
- Construction of air and water based systems for comfort cooling.
- Construction of potable water, hot water systems and drainage systems.
- Principles for energy efficient designs.
- Principles for air conditioning due to demands for humidification and dehumidification.

Organisation

The course is given in form of an advanced design exercise. Lectures calculation exercises and computer labs support and clarify various course topics. The work is followed, supported and evaluated by a team of teachers and external HVAC consultants. The course also comprises activities due to measurement techniques regarding water and air flows, temperatures and heat flows.

Literature

Warfvinge, Dahlblom: Projektering av VVS-installationer, Studentlitteratur

Examination including compulsory elements

Examination is based on approved obligatory laboratory practical and design exercises and active participation during the final presentation completed with a written examination, four grade scale (TH). Examination is based on the obligatory parts and written course material.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
