Aim

The students shall understand the complexity of integrating different professional disciplines as well as engaging stakeholders in the design process in order to be able to develop a skill in managing the design process in the construction sector. The long-term objective of the course is to add to the development of design management as a value adding activity. The student shall also understand the concept of Building Information Modell (BIM) and it's opportunities and implications on the design process and the management of this process.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Explain the role of the design process in the construction process and give examples of actors active in this process (general part)
  • Describe the structure of the consultant field in the construction sector (general part)
  • Describe how a design process/product development process is executed, phases and organisation (general part)
  • Give examples of regulations, standards and rules that govern the design process (general part)
  • Identify roles, functions and ways of working in order to understand the organizing of the design process 
  • Explain roles, functions and ways of working and how this contribute to the development of the design process
  • Relate roles, functions and ways of working and how this relates to the students own future role with regard to project objectives
  • Use BIM and related methods in the design process

Content

  • Basic design management/design process management terminology, standards and ways of organizing the design process and the work 
  • Roles and functions in a design team, design manager, professional functions etc.
  • Utilization of BIM-tools for design, design coordination and design reiview.
  • Basic orientation about the importance of the design process phases and their relationships to the complete construction process.


Organisation

The course starts with a set of lectures and is followed by seminars and project assignments and computer tutorials and exercises related to the project.

Examination including compulsory elements

The examination consists of project assignments, seminars, submission of reports. In addition, project tasks related to BIM-tools has to be completed and submitted.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
